Festive, Revisited

Frigid temperatures and brilliant sunshine await as I step outside to begin my long ride to Connecticut for the office Christmas party. It turns from a ride to a trek when outside Greenwich, traffic slows to a crawl. I have mixed feelings about the evening. I don’t know the majority of the cast of characters, none of the significant others (of which I am part), office party etiquette, and whether what I am wearing (black with lavender accents) will prove festive.

Deep lavender nails.

My significant other and I, in a flood of fast paced movement, switch from my car to his and race (because we are late) to the home of an office principal, where the cocktail portion of the party began almost an hour earlier. Pulling up to a white house, with circular drive, bigger than any home I know (whatever that means) had me gasping for air. Continue reading

The Color Festive

My significant other has invited me to his office Christmas party this Thursday evening and I silently, privately (one would think I was above or beyond this already) freak out about – of all things – what to wear. Why and how this can still be the big deal that it is, fascinates me. It takes me a while – hours, days, depending – to find my center of gravity and understand that whatever I choose to wear, if I wear it well, comfortably, and with confidence, will look fine. But therein lies the rub. Continue reading

If Not for You

If Not for You.

If Not for You

If not for you
My sky would fall
Rain would gather too
Without your love I’d be nowhere at all
I’d be lost if not for you
And you know it’s true

If not for you
Winter would have no spring
Couldn’t hear the robin sing
I just wouldn’t have a clue
Anyway it wouldn’t ring true
If not for you

Chorus and verse from one of the most prolific songwriters of the 20th century, Bob Dylan. If Not For You. The song is in my head. This happens. I like music, I like the music I grew up listening to, and sometimes it gets stuck in a groove in my brain and keeps replaying. Perhaps it’s due to the season, or appreciation for those in my life, or the fact that I miss my parents. Or, more recently, the numbers of people kind enough to vote for the book I’ve written. Unwittingly (or wittingly) moving me toward publication. Maybe.Regardless, they are voting, and caring, and making a difference.

I’m grateful for kind people, caring people, loving people, helpful people. Changing the world as they do, in small and large ways. What are we here for if not to help one another, grow ourselves and our environment, be our own (and others’) shining stars? Ordinary people doing ordinary things. Shine. Brightly. Don’t we need to stand for something? The human beings we choose to be, the character traits and core values we choose to encompass, the actions and behaviors we choose to exhibit to ourselves and to the world…Do we care, do we help, does it matter?

Yes. It. Does.

Do not lull yourself into an obscure foolishness that it doesn’t. Smile at a stranger, hum a tune or sing loudly (a particularly great activity on long car rides), Vote for Wendy’s book, call a friend, help someone out. It feels good, it feels useful, it matters. And if more of us did it, think about how different our world might be…

Imagine.

Do. Something. Today.

Finish this sentence; If not for you…

Then tell a friend, who might pass it forward.

My link is below. Please take a moment and vote (I need crazy large numbers, 880 more votes to be exact!). It’s up to you. Either way your actions speak. Thank you.

I’m in!

This time of year is intriguing, it becomes hard to tell what’s real and what’s commercial fluff. And there’s a lot of fluff. Phony happy smiling people who aren’t happy at all. They don’t care one hoot about you. But then there are surprises. The pleasant, unexpected, kind and random gestures that make you believe in humanity again. Continue reading

Dear friends, family, readers;

I have entered the concept of my book to a small publisher who is holding a contest for the idea that gets the most votes. (For some of you this is redundant as I sent a personal email to this effect). I would greatly appreciate your taking a moment to go to the link below and VOTE for mine.

Congratulations!  Your book idea has been accepted and is available for voting:  http://soopllc.com/blog/book-ideas/passing-wendy-karasin/#.Up3XPPssyfA

I thank you in advance for your help…hey, you never know!

5 Pounds Later…Not A bad Life

Thanksgiving is over, everyone has gone, I am slowly returning to my pre-Thanksgiving life. We have enumerated our blessings, speaking aloud our thankfulness. Relationships were the main category, but …items such as; health, shelter, food (such good food and so much of it!), a sense of worth and usefulness, happiness and creativity were not overlooked.

Family, angle one…
