Journey To Publish: Slowing Down

A late start, that’s okay, inspiration can come from the strangest places. The beauty of slowing down is that you miss less. What pulled me into the moment with my parents’, and grabbed me fast, was the time limitation. I could not put off for later what I wasn’t willing to handle now because I wasn’t sure there would be a later.

There is a larger lesson looming. Continue reading

Journey To Publish: Presence

After deleting 50% of what I had originally written, I thought I had the workings of a good memoir. Because my writing was initially used as a coping strategy, I had data far too detailed for any normal (non scientific/medical) reader. I was a recording machine utilizing any vehicle available to me. Dates, times, places, amounts and names of medications were so precise you could have made bets on them and won. I worked with both an upstate book coach referred by a college friend and a local editor referred by an acquaintance. Continue reading

Scott and Me

Me and Scott

When I open my heart and mind, especially to the right person, in comes love. Not only is this another aside from my #journeytopublish posts, it’s a Saturday post, which is a first. I was catching up with my middle son, Scott, on the phone yesterday. One more digression, please forgive me, but for those of you with young children, wonderful and cute as they are, wait until they are older and you are having adult conversations with the people you care most about in the world. Their opinions, thoughts, considerations, concerns, new and old ideas – I can barely express how spectacular a feeling this is. Anyway, during our discussion, Scott asks about my blog.

“What happened?” he asks. Continue reading

Journey To Publish: Little By Little

I’m pulled from today’s Journey To Publish post by an aside. Asides are not uncommon in my life. An expression one of my yoga instructors uses often, but also teaches and lives by is: Little by little. It is a less than glorious statement conjuring images of baby steps instead of leaps and bounds. But to her credit I do not get injured on her watch and I do improve. Within her little by little framework she points out the smallest tweaks in musculature and positioning, after she has spent time isolating a particular area and making us cognizant of a muscle or motion most of us were unaware of moments before. I tend to be a big picture individual and I like to get from here to there, fast. Continue reading

Journey To Publish

What a difference a life time makes…

At this point an occurrence not altogether dissimilar to my mother’s is happening in Florida to my father. In the case of both my parents, a blood test proved to be an important indicator of a serious problem. We didn’t know, believe, or fully understand then, that these conditions would prove fatal. My mom’s diagnosis ran through my system like an open sheath of exposed nerves. My dad’s ran through my system like a dull aching drum roll. Both reactions had the insidious effect of depleting my energy, concentration and ability to live a normal life.

I had long viewed the meaning of the word normal with some degree of skepticism, but now I was pretty sure it needed a complete overhaul or, at the very least, multiple additions to its definition. Continue reading

The Journey To Be Published

I’m on a journey. The journey of a non-famous, non-wealthy, “new” face that believes her manuscript is book-worthy. Many questions can be asked of such an author:

  • What is your book about?
  • What makes it different than others on the market?
  • Do you have a platform?
  • Why would someone want to read your book?

Nowadays, being a writer is not enough. Continue reading
