Did You Say Zero to Hero?

This is pretty funny. Contests abound. As you may know, I entered a contest through SOOPLLC.com to introduce my book, Passing Through, and receive (if I get enough votes) a publishing contract offer. Please click on this link to vote for Passing Through: http://soopllc.com/blog/book-ideas/passing-wendy-karasin. Today I find Wordpress is hosting a Zero To Hero contest, in which they ask bloggers to introduce themselves and be involved in a 30 day project to better their blogs. Step One: Introduce yourself; who are you and why are you here?

I’m Wendy Karasin, a Brooklyn native who has traveled somewhat extensively, loves education, health and fitness, yoga, reading and writing. I live on Long Island now and have for the past few decades. I began blogging after I wrote a memoir about surviving the loss of my parents, consciously and compassionately, while remaining in life, wholly. A task less easy than one might expect. After the fantasy dust of getting published quickly settled, I read that I needed a platform whether I self published or went the traditional publishing route. The unintended outcome was the enjoyment of sharing life experiences by writing about them. It has given me a forum for getting my thoughts out of my head and/or computer and into the world. I write about topics that affect my life from a Boomer’s perspective (thus the title: Musings of a Boomer). I am a thinker so I tend to get introspective. I am a participant in life, on the court, in the game. For me the experience has been a win-win. I hope to help others navigate the big issues of life by reading about how I did (as I read about how others did). We learn from one another and in the world I choose to live in, we teach and help one another through.

Snow, 2014!

Snow, 2014!

January 3, 2014. I wake to a boatload of snow. White, untrodden, clean. Since I have no need to leave the house today, and have 2 kids home to shovel once they awake, I sit peacefully at my (desktop) computer and write. My laptop remains at Staples and the likelihood of receiving it today depends on whether they are open and whether I can get to them. Which probably won’t happen. I took pictures of the snow on my phone. It has taken me 20 minutes to figure out how to get them onto this blog and I’m pleased to report – I did it!

The snow is beautiful. And plentiful. Thickened clumps of bright white flakes lie everywhere, on tree limbs, driveways, cars. I like snow, ever since I was a kid and it meant no school along with sled riding or skiing. I stay indoors (except for shoveling) and allow a lazy peace to overtake me. There is nothing I need – food, shelter, companionship, and warmth are mine inside. An Continue reading

2013, Gone for Good

New Year, computer, party, music, dance, friends, Long Beach, StaplesPosted on January 1, 2014by

2013 is fini, kaput, no more. I spent yesterday evening in Long Beach with friends singing, dancing, eating, laughing and celebrating. I saw people I hadn’t seen in years. The experience felt warm and loving and nurtured my soul. Music and dancing are favorites I don’t incorporate often enough, reserved as they are for special occasions. That seems a easy fix in 2014.

2013, Gone for Good

2013 is fini, kaput, no more. I spent yesterday evening in Long Beach with friends singing, dancing, eating, laughing and celebrating. I saw people I hadn’t seen in years. The experience felt warm and loving and nurtured my soul. Music and dancing are favorites I don’t incorporate often enough, reserved as they are for special occasions. That seems a easy fix in 2014.

I walked into Staples this morning at 11 a.m. to handle to computer debacle. The tech that originally worked on my computer and the manager greet me with broad smiles. Since Staples Corporate stands behind the solution, the encounter is amicable, quick, and informative. I’m shown my new Gateway which first debuted in October, 2013. It is bigger and heavier than my Acer. I like the small, light Acer but must admit to this computer feeling more stable and substantial. Windows 8, if you have not yet encountered it, is entirely different from Windows 7. I tend to like what I get used to, preferring familiarity to advancement – at least initially. This will require time and attention. Additionally and thankfully, I do not have to purchase new software (as in Microsoft Office) because the tech found a disk to install it. The new set up should be available for pick up on Friday.

In concluding the year, I like taking time to reflect on what I’ve learned, what I have to be grateful for, what my mind/body/spirit have mastered. Moving forward, I like to consider where I want to be and how I choose to get there, remaining open to life, love and the serendipitous occurrences that make them both worth living.
