Coffee Cocoon

zero-to-heroThe sun shone brightly around the edges of drawn blinds, whispering good morning. Stretching, I break free from my blanket cocoon. Donning a lightweight but warm sweatshirt and furry slippers I keep the cocoon theme alive and head downstairs to begin my favorite morning ritual. I pull a stay fresh bag of Starbucks from the freezer (I’ve kept my coffee there the better part of my life and no one, not even Google, is going to tell me it doesn’t remain fresher) and add scoops to the coffeemaker with measured amounts of filtered water. A gurgling sound soon couples with the aromatic scent of Komodo Dragon. Quietly, on a cocoa suede bar stool, I sit  anticipating. Continue reading

George Saunders’ Advice to Graduates

I read this on Waiting for the karma truck. A speech to the graduating 2013 class at Syracuse University. But it could be any individual sharing a worthy life lesson because when it comes down to what matters, kindness is up there with a beating heart.

George Saunders delivered this convocation speech at Syracuse University for the class of 2013. It subsequently went viral, and there’s a really solid reason for that; It’s awesome. In case you have not read it already, please enjoy;

George Saunders’ Advice to Graduates
George Saunders by Damon Winter from the The New York Times.

The entire speech, graduation season or not, is well worth reading, and is included below.

“Down through the ages, a traditional form has evolved for this type of speech, which is: Some old fart, his best years behind him, who, over the course of his life, has made a series of dreadful mistakes (that would be me), gives heartfelt advice to a group of shining, energetic young people, with all of their best years ahead of them (that would be you).
And I intend to respect that tradition.
Now, one useful thing you can do with an…

Thou Art Mine

This poem is circa 1970’s. I wrote a lot of poetry, lyrics and prose back then. It was famous for a short time in a small, college town where it hung on the wall of an oft visited local establishment.

Thou art mine,

I am thine

In everlasting harmony.

For all we need to sense

Is just the wonder

And the beauty of…

This great expanse

And constancy,

The fitting of our

Minds and bodies

Into oneness,

Into giving love.

Manna

zero-to-heroMy Type A personality is doing well with the challenges put before me. I am managing them and my expectations with an appreciation of time/space continuum, priorities, and the desire to see assignments to their finish. Nothing has been pushed to the side that requires attention (so far) and all is quiet on the western front. I mention the western front as I quite literally reread the book (All Quiet on the Western Front) with my college senior, high school English, student teaching daughter. Continue reading

Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday

zero-to-hero

I did a WordPress daily prompt (first one), and I’m looking over the assignment for my About Page. I will get to it. The truth is daily prompts, while worthwhile, are not my thing. I know they will bring me around to what I want to say eventually, but I can get there on my own. Usually.

I am a flurry with activity, a 3:30 appointment, a 4:30 appointment, a 6:30 departure time to head to Connecticut. My timing is less than stellar as my daughter has an interview tomorrow and is leaving to temporarily head back to school for a week long conference. It makes me sad to miss helping her get ready, be her cheerleader and say goodbye before she leaves. This happened to me with my parent’s too. I want to be around for everything (obviously unreasonable) and I don’t like goodbyes. My neurosis.

She is more than capable of handling these life experiences on her own, and maybe that’s a tough pill to swallow too. My baby, is no baby. To top it off, I saw a few pictures of myself in college today on Facebook. Wow, how the years flew by. It’s a good life (and a quick one) and tomorrow is our mystery. So, my friends, look forward, and keep trucking! Because before you know it, tomorrow will be yesterday.
